A Brutal, Beautiful Dive Into the Mind of Marvel’s Most Broken Hero

Moon Knight has worn many faces over the years: superhero, Avenger, priest, and monster, but this new volume strips away the supernatural pomp to remind us of the man beneath the white mask. 

Writer Jed MacKay and artist Alessandro Cappuccio have reunited to deliver a debut issue that feels less like a superhero comic and more like a psychological crime thriller bleeding out onto the pavement of New York City. The Midnight Mission is gone, the vampires are in the rearview mirror, and all that is left is Marc Spector trying to solve a murder that the police won't touch.

The brilliance of this issue lies in its claustrophobia. By removing the grand, cosmic stakes that have defined the character recently, the creative team forces us to confront the fractured psyche of the protagonist in a very intimate way. We are back to the "street level" detective work that made the character a cult icon, but with a modern, cinematic edge.
